Mary Whyte “We the People”

2019

Palmetto Scene | PBS South Carolina

I drew inspiration from Mary's dedication to unveiling the narratives of often overlooked individuals on a larger stage through her medium of watercolor. I came across her upcoming exhibit, "We the People," which celebrates veterans from diverse backgrounds and walks of life across the United States and set out to capture her journey and process. Despite working solo, I was committed to authentically depicting Mary's discovering of individuals who encountered challenges upon returning to civilian life after their service. This feature includes a formal interview with the artist and offers a behind-the-scenes look into her creative process.

(Pictured beside Mary in an RV at a rest stop) I accompanied the artist to Tennessee illuminating her creative process, sketching the essence of a veteran who owned and operated a barber shop. A few weeks after, I followed her to North Carolina to interview with a veteran amputee and capturing the emotional moment of revealing his portrait.
