At 28, I stumbled upon the intriguing world of art residencies, a concept previously unbeknownst to me. The notion of artists finding solace in rural landscapes to create freely or at minimal cost struck a chord. It echoed my affinity for narratives centered around creation, community, and history—a theme that continually shapes my work. Thus, my quest led me to explore art residencies in South Carolina, where The Rensing Center caught my eye.
Nestled in the serene embrace of the Blue Ridge Mountains, The Rensing Center offers a picturesque haven where artists can thrive. The air here feels purer, carrying whispers of tranquility amidst the mountain breeze. It's a place that beckons exploration, a testament to the laid-back vibe of its inhabitants. If you haven't experienced it yet, it's definitely worth a visit.
Browsing through The Rensing Center's website, I stumbled upon the captivating works of Susan Lenz, whose art spoke volumes about her profound connection to history and untold stories. Intrigued, I reached out, and soon found myself welcomed into her world. Arriving in my trusty PBS minivan, I was greeted by Susan's infectious enthusiasm. Stepping into her installation, I was transported through time by the intricate fabric of her creations. Enthralled by the stories woven into each piece, I wasted no time in setting up for our interview. As I delved deeper, I found myself drawn to the enigmatic artist and the driving force behind her captivating work.
